NFA: Hindustani Teaching Traditions in the Flute Studio (Workshop)

  • Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center 900 East Market Street San Antonio, TX, 78205 United States (map)

Event part of the National Flute Association Convention in San Antonio, TX

Workshop on the pedagogical application from Hindustani music for our own studio teaching!

In this workshop, context and background will be given on both the bansuri - the Indian bamboo flute - and the Hindustani music tradition, which can then bring valuable applications to our teaching studios. The pedagogy of the bansuri is based primarily on modeling, demonstration, and aural skills as opposed to relying on music reading and notation. This approach results in musicians who are much more comfortable with playing by ear, improvisation, and intonation. These are all skills that our students would benefit from, and can practice on their own flutes! Drawing from hands-on immersive study in India, Dr. Asthana will lead participants through various exercises they can bring home to their teaching studios to help students with these skills. This is also a great jumping-off point for all levels of flutist to begin learning about Hindustani musical forms and techniques in their own playing. Participants will also be led through a basic raag structure and improvisation to conclude the session.
